I’ve always been a PlayStation person (game system history nes, snes, saga, ps1, ps2, ps3) but now my 9 year old son wants an Xbox one mainly so he can play online with his friends because none of them are PlayStation people. At this point he will basically be only playing Minecraft, lego games, forza horizon 3 and any other age appropriate games we come across over time. So for starters how much is it to be online (this is the bs that kept me over in sony’s camp stupid to pay to be online in my opinion) and what the hell is gold? I cant seem to find the standard online price vs gold price. Why do kids have to want the opposite of their parents? What are some other pro’s for the xbox that I as a person who has never played one might not be aware of? For those of you who use both what are the cons so I can be prepared for them. I’m really pissed because we could have bought one for $150 a month ago and now all the prices are jacked back up sky high so looking for any deals anyone knows about too. Thanks in advanced oppo.

Gold is the standard online if you want to play with other people. I think it was like $60 CAD a year for it?

The only pay service is Gold. $60 / year but there’s almost always deals to be found to lower that cost. Standard online connectivity is free and allows for streaming services, Gold provides multiplayer and 5(iirc) free games each month.

Xbox live community has a much larger player base than PSN. Pros are more people to play with, cons are more douchebags.

I have both and play the Xbox a whole lot more than PS. Any other questions? Happy to answer.

Xbox live is free unless you pay for Gold. Gold gives you access to online multiplayer, free games every month, and lower prices on games among other benefits. Gold costs $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year.

Lucky you there is no normal online price. Xbox gold is online. I think it is ~$5 a month if you buy a full year. There is also the upgraded which gives you access to old games . I don’t play enough to want to pay for that service.

I made the jump over from PS3 and enjoy Xbox a little more. It might be the controller. The other reason was I thought the dedicated games were better (Forza, Halo, etc.). I also think it was easier to setup and get going. Otherwise there is very little difference to PS.

ok so 60 a year to let the 9 year old build a fake house in a fake world with fake friends and then blow it up. Got that part covered now. Geez He would be completely happy sticking with the ps3 for a while but he really wants to minecraft with his buddies online. I wish I could say no but this is the one thing he wants for his Bday.

pros for the xbone... hmmm.. well.. with gold you get 2 free games a month (sometimes they are good....) and theres forza...

and the controller really is nice (i preferred the slightly heavier 360 controller... but the one is still plenty nice.... just light)

also there is no standard online price.... without gold you get updates and stuff(like messaging) but no multiplayer

Yeah I’m thinking Halo might be his gateway to true 1st person shooter but were trying to hold off. the game is rated 13 and up so even though half the kids his age are playing grand theft and cod we are trying to keep him away from it. Doesn’t do much good that while they are at school its all they talk about. Swear he could walk you through some games he’s never even actually seen..

I’m with you. I’d like to just but one and buy a ton of games and I’m sure he would never complain but he really wants to connect to some people that we trust enough to let him play online with so that the motivation.

PSN is pay-for-multiplayer now too; you have to have PSN Plus on the PS4.

Keep an eye out on Amazon and eBay, I can almost always find a one year card for $40-45. Makes the cost a little easier to swallow. Kotaku deals usually finds and posts these when they come around.

As far as hardware, a standard XBOne can be had pretty cheap, particularly gently used from GameStop or Craigslist. One doesn’t *need* the S or X for Minecraft. Make sure your kid is respectful to the controllers - the thumbsticks are a known weak point.

just learned that about the ps4 this week. I get it but damn shit weak cant play older games and pay to play guess we will be jumping ship after all.will probably just pay the extra couple buck and get the s so that it will last a while. We burn through ps3 controllers pretty regular so i hope that are at least as strong as them otherwise it could start getting expensive.

Everyone else has covered pretty much everything, but I’ve got one extra tip for you. When minibell isn’t around play the Mass Effect trilogy. I’ve yet to find a better written, better scripted, more entertaining game (up until the last 10 minutes). Hell, just Joker’s dialogue alone (voiced by Seth Green) makes it worth getting the game

Be sure to get expansion DLCs, there’s some great side missions and extra characters (and extra guns) and the Citadel DLC is straight up magic.

I would recommend looking for used units over at pawn shops. The prices at my local ones seem quite reasonable, and there never seems to be a shortage of units for sale. I guess there are lots of twentysomethings that rush out and buy these units new and then pawn them when reality sets in and they have to pay the rent, electric bill and car note.

Back when I actually used gaming consoles for gaming (now they’re just media streamers / disc players to me) I would buy the 1 year gold card on Amazon for about $40-45, a 25% savings from list. The sellers were flaky and slow, but the savings made up for the headaches, sorta...

As I understand it, yes. But the game has to be part of their platform for this service, and not all of them are. And the dev has to have enabled cross-platform play.

I think you’re still going to have to fork over that $60/yr for Xbox Live Gold to play online/multi-player titles

Not to mention the months the psn was down in the aftermath. Pissed me off since i don’t put any real info into it in the 1st place. Burner style email account and only use psn gift cards for purchasing because I’m a skeptic about cards over the net though I’ve softened on that deal through the years.

Get a PC and tell his friends to suck it. Although I think some PC versions are able to be multiplayer with XBoxes, but without the XBox’s limitations (mostly upgradability).

Alternately, just get the XBox.
